Jerry Seinfeld Hints at a ‘Seinfeld’ Comeback
In a recent appearance in Boston, legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld, now 69 years old, dropped a tantalizing hint to his fans. Seinfeld, known for his iconic sitcom ‘Seinfeld,’ which concluded 25 years ago, suggested that something big might be in the works.
While performing at The Wang Theatre, Seinfeld let the audience in on his secret, though he couldn’t divulge all the details. He shared, “Well, I have a little secret for you about the ending. But I can’t really tell it because it is a secret. Here’s what I’ll tell you, OK, but you can’t tell anybody. Something is going to happen that has to do with that ending. Hasn’t happened yet. And just what you are thinking about, Larry and I have also been thinking about it. So you’ll see, we’ll see.”
Seinfeld’s popularity has seen a resurgence in recent years, thanks to Netflix acquiring the rights to the show in a massive deal worth over $500 million in 2019.
The series’ finale, originally aired in May 1998 and watched by a staggering 76.3 million viewers, received mixed reviews. It notably deviated from the show’s typical straightforward format, closing with main characters Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer finding themselves in an unexpected predicament—prison.
Interestingly, even Jerry Seinfeld himself has criticized the finale. In a 2017 interview with the New Yorker, he remarked, “I sometimes think we really shouldn’t have even done it. There was a lot of pressure on us at that time to do one big last show, but big is always bad in comedy.”
In contrast, ‘Seinfeld’ co-creator Larry David has consistently defended the finale’s choice, despite facing criticism from fans. In a 2014 interview with Grantland, David acknowledged, “I got so much grief from the Seinfeld finale.” Whether this hints at a revival or simply more discussions about the iconic show’s ending remains to be seen.
