Janelle Brown Says She Has ‘Nothing’ After Split

Sister Wives Star Janelle Brown Faces Uncertainty After Heated Clash with Husband Kody

Janelle Brown found herself in an emotional turmoil following a heated argument with her husband, Kody Brown, as shown in the latest episode of TLC’s reality series, Sister Wives, which aired on Sunday, September 10. Both 54 years old, the couple grappled with the aftermath of their intense dispute from the previous week. With tears in her eyes, Janelle expressed her struggle to recognize the man she had been living with.

“I don’t know who this guy is,” she shared during Sunday’s episode. “Maybe this is who he always was. I don’t know, but I don’t recognize this very mean person.”

Amidst her fractured relationship with Kody, Janelle voiced her concerns about her future. “I’m stuck,” she admitted. “Financially, I have nothing.”

Janelle drew a comparison with fellow sister wife, Christine Brown, who was the first to leave the plural family. She highlighted her predicament, saying, “Christine had the house, I have nothing. My name is on property with everybody else.” Referring to the Browns’ shared land in Flagstaff, Arizona, she expressed doubt about everyone’s willingness to cooperate moving forward.

As the reality of her situation sank in, Janelle couldn’t help but question how she ended up in this position. “I can’t believe I’m 50 and I can’t even do my own thing because I’m so tied up with them financially. … I can’t believe I got myself into this position,” she admitted.

The Complex History of Janelle and Kody’s Marriage

Janelle entered a spiritual union with Kody back in 1993 while he was already legally married to Meri Brown. Although Kody and Meri, 52, divorced in 2014, they remained in a spiritual marriage until confirming their separation earlier this year. Kody’s only current legal wife is Robyn Brown, whom he married in 2014.

Christine, 51, joined the polygamous family in 1994. Fans of Sister Wives were taken aback when she and Kody announced their breakup in 2021, but Christine and Janelle have maintained a close bond after the split.

During the Sister Wives: One-on-One reunion in December 2022, Janelle revealed that she and Kody had been “separated for months.” Tensions have remained high between the now-exes throughout the show’s 18th season, which premiered in August.

The Rollercoaster Life of Kody Brown

Kody Brown, the star of Sister Wives, has had his hands full managing his relationships with his three former partners, Meri Brown, Janelle Brown, and Christine Brown, along with his current wife, Robyn Brown. The Browns’ family, comprising a total of 18 children, entered the public eye in September 2010 with the premiere of Sister Wives, when Kody was courting Robyn, who became his fourth wife.

The recent episode of the show revealed an intense argument between Kody and Janelle on September 3, where they accused each other of “gaslighting.” Janelle suggested that Kody no longer wanted to be a plural husband and was pushing her away, while Kody argued that she was taking Christine’s side as the family dynamic shifted. After the heated exchange, Janelle asked Kody to “come pick up his stuff.”

As Janelle reflected on her “problems” with Kody in the latest episode, she clarified that her issue wasn’t with plural marriage itself. She still believed in its viability, saying, “I still believe that it can be lived and there’s a purpose for it. … I do think I could live plural marriage again.” However, she acknowledged that finding people who live this way is a rare occurrence.

You can catch Sister Wives on TLC, airing Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
