Indictment for Murder: Brutal Beating and Urination of Unresponsive Housemate

Man Indicted for Fatal Attack on Housemate in Port Jefferson Station

A Port Jefferson Station resident is facing serious charges after a horrifying incident that led to the death of his housemate. Felix Martinez, 46, allegedly beat and choked Richard Shields, 56, in front of their shared home. The incident took place on Jarvin Road, Port Jefferson Station, New York.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney revealed that Martinez has been indicted on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder for his alleged actions.

According to investigators, the confrontation between Martinez and Shields occurred on August 4, 2023. The event was captured by a neighbor’s home surveillance system, and the recorded footage is now in possession of the police.

The footage portrays Shields seated in a chair outside the house when Martinez approached him. Over the span of 15 minutes, Martinez is accused of repeatedly punching, choking, and stomping on Shields. The assault escalated when Martinez struck Shields on the head with a mop bucket. Shockingly, at the conclusion of the attack, Martinez allegedly stripped Shields of his clothing and urinated on him while he lay unconscious on the ground.

Suffolk County Police Department responded to the scene, finding Martinez calmly smoking a cigar outside the house. Shields was found unconscious near Martinez. Martinez was swiftly arrested while Shields was rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Shields succumbed to the injuries inflicted by Martinez’s assault and passed away on August 9.

Felix Martinez appeared before Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins for arraignment on the indictment charges. If convicted of the primary charge, Martinez could potentially face a sentence ranging from 25 years to life in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 22.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney emphasized the commitment to ensuring justice for victims of violence, stating, “My office will continue to work hard to ensure appropriate justice as a result. We will not allow individuals to carry out such acts of violence in Suffolk County without facing significant consequences.”

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of preventing violence and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
