Man Sentenced to 9 Years for Historic Building Arson in Indiana
Charles James Perrin, a resident of Evansville, Indiana, has received a nine-year prison sentence for setting fire to the century-old Pearl Laundry Center, a historic building in downtown Evansville. The building, a notable addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, had plans for restoration before it fell victim to arson.
Perrin’s guilty plea led to his sentencing in Vanderburgh County, where a judge imposed the nine-year prison term. The charges against him included arson and criminal mischief related to the destructive fire that left the Pearl Laundry Center in ruins. The Evansville Courier & Press reported on this case.
Perrin’s arrest occurred on May 18, with accusations pointing to his involvement in the fire that had occurred the previous day in downtown Evansville. The building, once known as the “Pearl Steam Laundry,” was left severely damaged as a result.
The investigators described the fire as an act of “self-gratification,” where Perrin even returned to the scene to “admire his work,” according to police statements.
The Pearl Laundry Center, constructed in 1912, holds historical significance, as evidenced by its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. While the laundry business ceased operations in 2018, plans were underway to transform this historic brick building into a commercial space by Pearl Development LLC, aiming to contribute to the revitalization of Evansville, an Ohio River city located about 170 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
