Judge Clears Chicago Man After 34 Years in Prison for Double-Murder Conviction

Francisco Benitez, now 52, insisted on his innocence from the very start. He recently presented his case for post-conviction relief, explaining that he had a solid alibi for the tragic incident that occurred on April 28, 1989. On that day, two 14-year-old boys, Prudencio Cruz and William Sanchez, lost their lives to a shooting. Benitez also claimed that he was unfairly targeted by detectives from the Chicago police who were trying to frame him.
Cook County Judge Sophia Atcherson made a significant ruling that has now paved the way for a potential reversal of Francisco Benitez’s conviction. The judge pointed to compelling evidence that was brought to light during a hearing held earlier this year. This new evidence strongly supported Benitez’s claim of innocence. Following the ruling, Francisco Benitez was granted a personal recognizance bond and will be under electronic monitoring.

“This has been an unbelievably long journey, and I’m relieved that my son is finally returning home,” said Betty Benitez, the mother of Francisco Benitez, expressing her emotions about the ongoing ordeal.
Joshua Tepfer, a member of Benitez’s legal team from the Exoneration Project, couldn’t help but highlight the unusual frequency of overturned convictions in Cook County. “This situation is far from normal,” Tepfer emphasized, noting the unsettling trend of convictions being reevaluated and reversed. He described it as an alarming situation that raises concerns about human rights violations.
