Explosion Sparks Evacuation in Idaho Town
Middleton, Idaho, found itself in a state of emergency when a gas pipeline exploded near the town. This unexpected incident led to a temporary evacuation, leaving residents startled and concerned.
The explosion occurred as a worker was operating an excavator, accidentally rupturing a 22-inch natural gas pipeline. Chief Deputy Douglas Hart of the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office reported that the excavator driver sustained minor injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
The ruptured pipeline is part of a larger interstate network owned by the Williams Companies, a natural gas distributor. This pipeline operated at a high pressure of about 750 pounds per square inch, prompting authorities to evacuate a 4-square-mile area around the break, including the entire town of Middleton.
Company’s Response
In response to the incident, the Williams Companies issued a statement, disputing local officials’ description of the event. They claimed that their workers had implemented shutdown procedures and coordinated with first responders. According to the company, there was no ignition, fire, or explosion, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.

Within minutes of the explosion, residents in the area shared their experiences on social media. Many reported hearing a significant explosion and ongoing noise, likening it to the sound of low-flying jets. Chief David Jones of the Middleton Fire Department Battalion noted that the explosion’s force was noticeable even a mile away.
After ensuring that the gas flow had been stopped, the evacuation order was lifted, and residents were advised to “shelter in place.” Roads in the vicinity remained closed while the gas company worked to cap off the broken section.
Middleton, a town with approximately 10,600 residents, is situated about 33 miles west of Boise, Idaho. The incident served as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions when dealing with natural gas pipelines, with authorities and companies working together to address such emergencies.
