Gunmen Attack Iranian Paramilitary Forces, Killing One and Injuring Three
Unidentified gunmen carried out a deadly attack on a group of paramilitary forces in southern Iran. The incident, which occurred in the town of Nourabad, resulted in the tragic death of one member, with three others sustaining injuries.
The motive behind this attack remains unclear, as local media has not provided specific reasons for the assault. The official IRNA news agency reported that the assailants targeted members of the paramilitary Basij, and the attack took place late in the evening.
Possible Anniversary Connection
Interestingly, the attack coincided with the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death, who tragically passed away in police custody a year ago. Her untimely demise had sparked nationwide protests, although it is yet to be confirmed whether this attack is linked to the anniversary.
Additional Incident Near Saqqez
In a separate incident near the city of Saqqez in Iran’s western Kurdish region, a man was shot and wounded by security forces. IRNA did not provide details about the circumstances leading to the shooting, except for mentioning that he had entered an area under military restrictions. Reports about his health vary, with some sources suggesting he is in critical condition and others indicating he is stable.
Anniversary Presence of Security Forces
On the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death, there was a significant deployment of Iranian security forces in both Tehran and Kurdish areas. Rights groups reported a general strike in Kurdish regions during this period.
Mahsa Amini, originally from the Kurdish region, tragically passed away on September 16, 2022, while in detention by Iran’s morality police in Tehran. Her detention was apparently due to violating Iran’s strict dress code, requiring women to wear an Islamic headscarf, known as a hijab, in public.
Her death sparked widespread protests across the country, with many demanding a change in Iran’s long-standing Shiite theocracy, which has ruled for four decades. In response, authorities launched a heavy crackdown, resulting in the deaths of over 500 people and the detention of more than 22,000, according to rights groups.
While the protests have subsided this year, signs of discontent with Iran’s clerical rulers still persist. In the months following the protests, there were instances of women openly flouting the hijab law, prompting authorities to initiate a renewed campaign to enforce it during the summer.
