Germany’s Military Ventures into the AI “Metaverse”
Germany is making significant investments in the pursuit of the future of combat through an artificial intelligence (AI) virtual training space, colloquially referred to as a military “metaverse.” GhostPlay project manager Gary Schaal, a professor at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, expressed their determination to compete with industry leaders, citing agility and rapid results as their Unique Selling Points.
A Virtual Battlefield for Military Innovation
Developer 21strategies spearheaded the creation of GhostPlay, a virtual battlefield where developers can experiment with various weapons and systems within a risk-free environment. The German Defense Ministry funded this project as part of a €500 million ($540 million) COVID-19 spending package aimed at revitalizing the nation’s high-tech defense sector.
AI-Powered Military Decision-Making
The GhostPlay platform, described as an “AI-based decision-making simulation environment at machine speed,” offers the opportunity to develop novel and superior military strategies. It enhances flexibility and superiority across strategic, tactical, and operational levels by simulating complex military battle scenarios.
Unpredictable Simulations for Enhanced Preparedness
The platform’s simulations introduce “unpredictable” conditions to enhance testing thoroughness and military planning preparation depth. This approach helps Germany’s armed forces adapt to a wide range of scenarios effectively.
“Third-Wave” Algorithms for Human-Like Decision-Making
A notable feature of GhostPlay is its use of “third-wave” algorithms, which CEO Yvonne Hofstetter believes replicate more “human-like” decision-making. Unlike second-wave algorithms that primarily optimize or expedite decision-making, third-wave algorithms generate new situations and innovative actions.
Recreating Realistic Environments
GhostPlay goes to great lengths to recreate lifelike environments, even down to the smallest details. This is achieved by aggregating satellite imagery and local databases, providing comprehensive information on everything from housing to vegetation.
Swarm Tactics Optimization
The platform has particularly focused on optimizing swarm tactics, especially in the deployment of loitering munitions. The Office of Army Development collaborates with GhostPlay due to its ability to recreate detailed deployment environments.
Mastering AI Competencies
Multinational company Hensoldt, which supports the GhostPlay platform, emphasized the importance of mastering artificial intelligence for highly complex defense systems. They develop a wide range of AI competencies in-house and complement them strategically.
Germany’s investment in this military “metaverse” underscores its commitment to advancing AI technology in defense, promising innovative and adaptable approaches to future combat scenarios.
