Georgia Sheriff Dies in Car Crash While Responding to Call for Service

Tragedy struck as a central Georgia sheriff lost his life while on duty. The sheriff’s car veered off the road, striking a tree and overturning, resulting in the fatal incident, according to authorities.

Sheriff Robert Rodgers of Wilcox County, who had been serving the community since 2016, tragically passed away on Tuesday afternoon. The crash occurred on Highway 233, located north of Rochelle and around 75 miles south of Macon. Coroner Janice Brown conveyed the unfortunate news to WGXA-TV.

Maj. Mitchell Thompson, expressing his sorrow on Facebook, highlighted how Rodgers had given his life while safeguarding the people of Wilcox County. The sheriff was known for his dedication and love for his community.

Lenny Brown, a close friend of Rodgers, shared his grief with WMAZ-TV. He described the situation as a “terrible tragedy” and remarked that the entire county would mourn for a significant time due to the loss.

Remembered for his altruism, Sheriff Rodgers was hailed as a remarkable law enforcement officer. His compassionate nature extended beyond the county’s borders, as he helped individuals from various backgrounds.

Plans for the funeral are pending, with the family requesting that donations be directed to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes Foundation in McDonough, in lieu of flowers. During this challenging time, law enforcement agencies and the Wilcox County School system offered their heartfelt condolences and support.

This unfortunate incident marks the second time a member of the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office has lost their life while on duty, the first being a deputy sheriff in 1965. Sheriff Rodgers also becomes the third law enforcement member in Georgia to pass away while serving this year.

The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating the crash, and more information regarding the cause will be shared in due course. The community mourns the loss of a beloved leader and friend, as agencies step in to assist the sheriff’s office in handling daily calls during this difficult period.
