Florida K-9 Officer Recovers After Snake Bite
In the midst of her annual training, “Liberty,” a 4-year-old police K-9 in Florida, found herself in a snakey situation. She was splashing around in shallow water in Tallahassee when she let out a yelp, signaling she was in trouble.
“It was scary. It was very noticeable and distinct to the snake bites,” said Bradenton Police Department Detective Lixa Moyett.
Liberty was quickly rushed to a local veterinarian’s office, where the doctor identified the culprit as a cottonmouth, also known as a water moccasin.
The good news is that Liberty received immediate medical attention, including antivenom and some much-needed rest. She even had laser treatments to speed up her healing process.
Now, thanks to the swift action taken, Liberty is expected to be back in action, as good as new, in no time, according to a post by the Bradenton Police Department on Facebook.
Liberty had previously been vaccinated with the “rattlesnake vaccine,” formally known as Crotalus Atrox Toxoid. This vaccine helps reduce the severity of effects and pain from venomous snake bites commonly found in North America.
Dr. Pamela Wright, a veterinarian at Fur Ever Friends Animal Hospital, explained, “It does protect against rattlesnakes, moccasins, cottonmouth, being the big ones. Certain areas of the country will be more prone to it than others. We see a lot here in Florida.”
Cottonmouth snake bites can be very dangerous, not just for pets like Liberty but also for people, as per the Florida Museum of Natural History.
But the story has a happy ending! Within a week of the snake encounter, Liberty was not only back to her training regimen but had also successfully completed the course. 🐾
