Florida man shot, arrested in Michigan after allegedly torching 4 state police cruisers

Michigan State Police Arrest Suspect in Cruiser Arson and Gunfight

In a dramatic turn of events, Michigan State Police apprehended a 39-year-old Florida man believed to be connected to the arson of four police cruisers and a subsequent gunfight outside a post in the Upper Peninsula. This incident unfolded during the execution of a search warrant in the Sault Ste. Marie area around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday.

According to Lieutenant Mark Giannunzio, a spokesperson for the state police, a heated exchange of gunfire erupted when officers confronted the suspect. Shots were fired at the troopers, prompting a swift response as officers returned fire. The suspect was wounded in the exchange and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The identity and condition of the suspect remain undisclosed at this time, as police investigations continue. Thankfully, no law enforcement officers sustained injuries during this tense encounter.

Just a day earlier, security cameras had captured footage of a suspect, described as a white male in camouflage attire, engaging in the destructive act. At approximately 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday, the perpetrator doused the police vehicles with gasoline and set them ablaze. From a distance, the suspect proceeded to shoot at the burning cruisers with a rifle.

Remarkably, this attack took place in an area of the police post easily accessible to the public. The suspect, after setting the vehicles ablaze, hastily departed the scene in an SUV.

Sault Ste. Marie, located at the northeastern tip of the Upper Peninsula, lies approximately 300 miles north of Detroit. The incident has raised questions about the security measures in place at the police post and the motive behind this brazen act. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to unravel the circumstances surrounding this startling incident.
