Fatal Point-Blank Shooting Claimed as ‘Firearms Safety’ Lesson, Woman States: Police

Tragedy Strikes as Woman Faces Charges in Fatal Shooting of 4-Year-Old Girl

In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded in Tennessee, a woman now faces felony charges for allegedly fatally shooting a 4-year-old girl under her girlfriend’s care. The incident took place on August 27, when Breanna Gayle Runions, 25, reportedly shot the child at point-blank range, resulting in her tragic death.

Runions, who possesses a handgun permit, initially claimed that she was demonstrating “firearms safety” to the child when the gun accidentally discharged. The child was in the custody of Christina Daniels, Runions’ girlfriend, at the time of the incident. However, Runions has no legal or biological relation to the victim.

Authorities revealed that Runions’ version of events was disputed by Daniels and another minor who witnessed the incident. Contrary to Runions’ claim of removing the gun’s magazine to ensure safety, accounts from Daniels and the minor suggested a different scenario.

According to Rockwood Chief of Police Kelly Pittman, “Runions was not acting as a foster parent in any capacity, as far as we know.” The child’s biological mother, Josie Starbuck, had recently transferred custody to Daniels.

The disturbing details of the incident reveal that the child was allegedly punished by Runions for not waking the adults and for taking food intended for Daniels. Reportedly, Runions struck the minors with a sandal and placed them in separate corners of the bedroom.

Tragically, Runions pressed the gun directly against the child’s chest and fired, leading to her fatal injury. Following the incident, Runions and Daniels rushed the injured child to a nearby Walmart parking lot, where emergency medical personnel were waiting. Despite their efforts, the child was pronounced dead at Roane Medical Center.

Runions now faces serious charges, including Aggravated Child Abuse and First Degree Murder. Both the Tennesse Bureau of Investigations and Rockwood Police are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the victim’s custody under Runions and Daniels.

As investigations continue, questions arise about the reasons behind the children living with individuals who were not their parents. The child’s mother, Josie Gunter, shared her heartbreak and guilt, mentioning her attempts to improve her financial stability for her children.

Breanna Gayle Runions is currently undergoing a mental health assessment and is being held at Roane County Jail, marking another tragic chapter in this devastating incident.
