Mamma Mia! Franchise: Will We See a Trilogy?
In 2008, Mamma Mia! took us on a Greek adventure, serenading us with ABBA’s timeless hits. But, it left us craving more. The magical duo of Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried charmed us as mother and daughter, Donna and Sophie.
Sophie, eager to uncover her father’s identity, embarks on a quest, reaching out to three of her mom’s past loves: Sam, Bill, and Harry. The mystery of her father remains unsolved, yet all three men embrace their roles as father figures. Meanwhile, the enchanting love story of Donna and Sam ignited our longing for a European fairy tale.
A decade later, Judy Craymer, the producer, delighted fans with a second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018). This installment introduced us to a young Donna, portrayed by Lily James, and her whirlwind romances. Cher joined the cast as Donna’s mother, Ruby Sheridan. The original cast, including Donna’s pals Rosie and Tanya, returned, playing pivotal roles in both stories.
The success of the first two films has stirred excitement about a potential third installment. Many of the cast and crew have expressed their desire to revisit Greece one last time.
Here’s a glimpse of what the Mamma Mia! team has shared about the prospect of a trilogy:
