El Chapo’s Son Faces US Court
In a pivotal moment, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of the infamous drug lord Joaquin Guzman, also known as “El Chapo,” made his first appearance in a US court. This significant event occurred just three days after his extradition from Mexico to the United States.
During his court appearance in Chicago on Monday, 33-year-old Guzman Lopez firmly denied allegations of drug-related offenses and money laundering. Ovidio Guzman Lopez, along with his three brothers, collectively known as “Los Chapitos,” found themselves at the helm of their father’s criminal empire following his 2019 conviction for murder and drug charges.
Joaquin Guzman, the former leader of the notorious Sinaloa cartel, now resides in a high-security “super-max” prison in Colorado, serving a life sentence. Inheriting their father’s vast multibillion-dollar enterprise, the Guzman brothers took the organization in a new direction, focusing on synthetic drugs like methamphetamine and the potent opioid fentanyl.
Fentanyl, a particularly deadly substance, has been linked to the tragic deaths of nearly 200 people daily in the United States. This development underscores the far-reaching consequences of the Guzman family’s operations within the illicit drug trade.
