Drew Barrymore Addresses Production Resumption Amid Hollywood Writers Strike
Drew Barrymore, the celebrated actress and TV host, has offered an apology following her decision to recommence production of The Drew Barrymore Show amidst the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike. Facing significant public criticism, Barrymore took to Instagram to address her critics, many of whom accused her of crossing the picket line.
In a tearful video message, Barrymore acknowledged the complexity of the situation and emphasized that her intentions had never been to upset or harm anyone involved in the strike. She extended a heartfelt apology to the writers and unions, recognizing that her actions might not sit well with everyone.
“I understand that there’s nothing I can do to make this okay for those who are not okay with it. I fully accept that,” Barrymore said, her emotions evident. “In tough times, making decisions can be challenging. So, all I can say is that I wanted to take responsibility, and I don’t have a PR machine behind this.”
Barrymore went on to explain her decision to resume production during the strike, citing her desire to support the livelihoods of her show’s crew and staff. She emphasized that her show had provided a source of comfort during the pandemic, and she saw no reason why it should be halted now.
“I wanted to do this because, as I said, this is bigger than me and there are other people’s jobs on the line,” Barrymore stated. “And since we launched during a global pandemic, I simply wanted to create a show that could be there for people during sensitive times. I weighed the options, and I thought, if we could continue during a global pandemic and all that 2020 threw at us, why should we be sidelined now? I take full responsibility, and we are committed to not discussing or promoting any struck film or television.”
Barrymore’s decision faced scrutiny from various quarters, but a spokesperson for the SAG-AFTRA union clarified that The Drew Barrymore Show operates under a separate contract, the Network Television Code, which is unaffected by the ongoing strike. The spokesperson confirmed that Barrymore’s role as host does not violate the current strike rules.
The fourth season of The Drew Barrymore Show is scheduled to premiere on September 18th.
