Charlie’s Angels Director McG Teases Potential Third Movie with Original Cast
Charlie’s Angels fans, get ready to revisit the iconic trio! Director McG has hinted at the possibility of a third movie featuring the beloved original cast members: Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly on August 30, McG expressed his enthusiasm about the idea. He mentioned, “It would take a long discussion with those three wonderful performers who I adore. There always seems to be chatter about that.”
McG, who directed the first two Charlie’s Angels films, shared his admiration for the actresses and their impact on his career. He acknowledged that he’s open to passing the torch to new talent while also considering the potential for another compelling story with the original cast. He emphasized, “I love the three of them so much. They put me on the map.”
The original Charlie’s Angels TV show premiered in 1976, introducing crime-fighting secret agents Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett), Sabrina Duncan (Kate Jackson), and Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith). The concept has remained timeless, with the first movie releasing in 2000 and a sequel in 2003. In 2019, director Elizabeth Banks brought a fresh take to the franchise with a new cast including Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska.
The possibility of a reunion gained momentum when Cameron Diaz expressed her excitement during an Instagram Live session in April 2020. Drew Barrymore, too, spoke about the enduring significance of Charlie’s Angels as the film celebrated its 20th anniversary. Barrymore emphasized the strong friendships that formed during the making of the films, highlighting the importance of empowered female characters with humor and capability.
Drew Barrymore showcased her close bond with co-stars Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz on her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show. Reflecting on their genuine friendship, Barrymore shared, “We’ve also been there in the small moments and the casual moments, and we are such good friends because it’s real. It’s not a Hollywood fairy-tale.”
