Big Brother Fans Question Cory Wurtenberger’s Vote
During the live eviction episode on Thursday, September 7, some Big Brother fans detected an unusual discrepancy in Cory Wurtenberger’s vote. Cory, 21, seemingly said, “I vote to evict Red [Utley],” but several viewers noticed that his lip movements didn’t match the audio.
One viewer on Twitter posted a clip of Cory’s vote and pointed out the mismatch: “I knew it wasn’t a damn lag; his lips said Jag [Bains], but the voiceover said Red 💀.” Jag, 25, was one of the nominees alongside Red, 38.
Speculation arose among viewers that the show’s producers may have edited the audio to alter Cory’s vote.
Controversies in Big Brother
Big Brother has a history of controversies, including instances of racism and discrimination over the years. Season 15, in particular, garnered significant attention due to derogatory comments made by houseguest Aaryn Gries about Asian people and her offensive remarks toward her Black and Korean roommates.
Some fans questioned the conspiracy theories surrounding Cory’s vote, with one Twitter user suggesting, “Y’all please say ‘Jag’ and ‘Red’ in the mirror 20 times. It’s the same mouth shape. It’s truly that simple. The live show did not do some tricks with only Cory’s vote.”
Cory’s brother, Zach Wurtenberger, provided a potential explanation for the apparent discrepancy. During a podcast episode, Zach mentioned that Cory has a speech impediment related to pronouncing ‘Rs,’ which could have led to the misinterpretation of his vote.
Expecting the Unexpected
In the world of Big Brother, fans are accustomed to unexpected twists from the show’s producers. While some twists have impacted players’ games, such as season 8’s “America’s Player,” Eric Stein, others, like Jun Song, have skillfully used unforeseen circumstances to their advantage.
Even if Cory intended to vote for Jag, it wouldn’t have altered the outcome of the eviction episode. Red was evicted by a vote of 10-2, with only Cameron Harding and Bowie Jane voting to save Jag.
Frustrations with Production
This season, Big Brother fans have expressed frustration with the show’s production on multiple occasions. After Luke Valentine’s expulsion for using a racial slur, some viewers questioned why Jared Fields, who used an offensive term to describe another houseguest, wasn’t similarly penalized.
Since Big Brother began in July 2000, a few contestants have left the game early for various reasons, often leading to fan speculation before an official announcement. Paloma Aguilar’s self-eviction from Big Brother 24 serves as a recent example.
Luke, who was expelled from the game, appeared to criticize Jared and the show’s producers for selective enforcement of conduct rules, which garnered attention on social media.
Addressing the Regret
While Jared’s use of the offensive term has not been addressed on the show, he expressed remorse for his comments during a conversation captured on the live feeds. He acknowledged his mistake, saying, “I don’t think she’s the R-word. I slipped up. Obviously, I was angry about it [and] I’m willing to admit that.”
Big Brother airs on CBS on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
