Death toll of Vietnam’s 9-story apartment building fire climbs to 56

Tragedy Strikes Hanoi: 56 Lives Lost in High-Rise Fire

In a devastating incident that unfolded in Hanoi, Vietnam earlier this week, a raging fire engulfed a nine-story apartment building, claiming the lives of 56 individuals. The cause of this catastrophic blaze, which tore through entire families, remains undisclosed at this time.

Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted harrowing moments as they observed desperate attempts by some residents to escape the inferno by leaping from the upper floors of the building.

Children Among the Victims

Authorities in Hanoi have confirmed that among the 56 casualties, ten were innocent children. Witnesses who were present during the tragic events reported heart-wrenching scenes of people trying to flee the flames by jumping from the upper stories.

Cause of Fire Still Unknown

Despite ongoing investigations, the precise cause of the fire remains a mystery. The devastating incident began shortly before midnight on Tuesday and raged on until Wednesday morning, leaving the nine-story apartment building in Vietnam’s capital severely damaged.

A Somber Tribute

As the flames were finally extinguished, a somber atmosphere enveloped the area. Friends and relatives of the deceased gathered to pay their respects at a makeshift shrine outside the building, where incense offered a solemn tribute to the victims.

Eyewitness Accounts

Witnesses shared their accounts with The Associated Press, suggesting that the fire may have originated from an electrical switchboard on the ground floor, a space also utilized for parking approximately 80 motorbikes and bicycles. Thick smoke quickly filled the building, making escape challenging for those trapped inside.

One survivor, Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, recounted the terrifying moment when her family, asleep on the first floor, heard the alarm. Amidst dense smoke and approaching flames, she and her family narrowly escaped, though tragically, her mother-in-law did not make it to the staircase in time.

Huyen’s husband, however, heroically reentered the building to rescue his mother, and together they descended using a ladder propped up by a neighbor.

“We’ve lost everything, but it doesn’t matter because the entire family escaped the fire,” Huyen said. “We survived the tragedy but it breaks my heart that many of my neighbors couldn’t make it.”

Desperate Measures to Survive

As the fire rapidly spread through the building, residents on higher floors faced increasing desperation. Many, like Pham Thu Hang, a pharmacist living nearby, chose to jump to escape the flames.

Hang described the makeshift efforts to save lives, including providing mattresses and blankets as cushions for those forced to jump. She recalled the haunting thudding sounds of people landing on neighboring roofs.

The Grim Toll

Hanoi police reported that some entire families had tragically perished in the blaze. To date, authorities have been able to identify only 39 of the 56 victims. An additional 37 individuals sustained injuries, with approximately half of them admitted to Bach Mai hospital.

Hospital director Dao Xuan Co highlighted the severity of injuries, which included head and spinal trauma, broken bones, and potential internal injuries, emphasizing the challenges faced by victims who had resorted to jumping from the building.

A Nation in Mourning

In a poignant show of respect, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Cabinet observed a minute of silence during a meeting in honor of the victims. This tragedy has left the nation in mourning as it grapples with the immense loss of life.
