Father Admits Guilt in Tragic Motorway Death of 12-Year-Old Son
In a tragic incident that unfolded last month, 12-year-old Callum Rycroft lost his life after being struck by a Toyota C-HR while walking on the eastbound carriage of the M62. The circumstances surrounding this devastating event suggest that Callum was accompanied by a man following an earlier crash involving an Audi Q5 on the slip road to Hartshead services.
Today, in a solemn courtroom session at Leeds Crown Court, Matthew Rycroft, Callum’s father, admitted his guilt by pleading guilty to charges of manslaughter and dangerous driving. Additionally, he acknowledged failing to provide a specimen for analysis. Matthew Rycroft now awaits his sentencing date behind bars.
The tragedy unfolded on August 5th, around 9.50pm, when police responded to an emergency call on the M62, situated between junctions 25 and 26. The investigation suggests that young Callum was attempting to navigate his way from the central reservation to the hard shoulder when the fatal collision with the Toyota occurred.
This heart-wrenching incident occurred following a separate single-vehicle crash involving the Audi earlier that night, compounding the sorrow of the situation.
In memory of her beloved son, Callum’s mother shared heartfelt sentiments, saying, “Callum was a beautiful, happy soul who was unique, great fun, and larger than life. He brought light, laughter, and noise into any room. Callum had a massive impact on everyone who met him. The house is so quiet without him here. We are devastated at what has happened and request that people respect our wish for privacy at this difficult time. We are very grateful for the support and kind comments we have received.”
The pain and loss of young Callum’s life serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the consequences that can unfold when it is neglected.
