Search Underway for Missing Hiker in Rocky Mountain National Park
A search operation is in progress at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado as officials seek to locate a man who went missing during a 28-mile solo hike through challenging mountain trails and rocky terrain.
The Disappearance
Chad Pallansch, a 49-year-old resident of Fort Collins, Colorado, embarked on his solo journey from the East Inlet Trailhead near Grand Lake. However, the last contact with him was around noon on a Wednesday, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
Pallansch was reported as overdue the following day. Park rangers discovered his vehicle still parked at the North Inlet Trailhead on the park’s west side.
The Trek
Pallansch had chosen an extensive 28-mile route that would take him across the Continental Divide. This route included both established trails and off-trail sections across steep, rocky slopes. Although he carried personal navigation equipment, officials pointed out that it was not designed for emergency assistance.

Described as a “fit runner” with a history of trail running, Chad Pallansch was no stranger to outdoor challenges. While he had not previously attempted this specific route, he had run numerous trails within the park, including Longs Peak, more than 30 times. His marathon experience also showcased his endurance.
Search Efforts
The search for Pallansch mobilized a team of 55 individuals, including 38 search team members actively scouring the area. Ground crews were complemented by air reconnaissance and a heat-sensing fixed-wing flight to enhance the search.

Chad Pallansch’s intended travel route includes several key locations, such as Lake Verna, Mount Alice, Chiefs Head Peak, Black Lake, Mills Lake, and Flattop Mountain.
