Tragic Incident Unfolds: Family Members Identified in Apparent Murder-Suicide
A heart-wrenching incident has rocked New York City as the police unveil the identities of the victims involved. Edison Lopez, aged 41, along with his wife Aleksandra Witex, aged 40, and their two young children, Calvin, 3, and Lucian, 1, were discovered lifeless in their Upper East Side apartment on West 86th Street. The shocking turn of events took a grim twist when Lopez, the family’s building superintendent, fatally stabbed himself in the neck.
According to authorities, Lopez left his family near their apartment’s front door before inflicting a fatal self-inflicted wound on his bed. No note was left behind, nor were there any posts on social media that would have hinted at the tragic events that were about to unfold.
Lopez’s father, Mario Lopez, became alarmed when he received no response from his son and wife after multiple attempts to reach them. It was he who ultimately discovered the unsettling scene when he knocked out the peephole in their apartment door. The elder Lopez was prompted to take action after his wife, who was scheduled to care for the youngest child that day, received no replies to her calls and messages.
Tragedy struck a seemingly loving family with no history of domestic violence or emergency calls to their address. Neighbors and friends of the family, echoing the sentiments of NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, attested to their affectionate nature, underscoring that there were no visible signs of distress.

In a poignant twist, it was revealed that earlier on the same day, Lopez had taken his children and a neighbor to the nearby Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Lopez, who was transitioning from his role in the building to a position in a Westchester County suburb, seemed to be grappling with the changes. Police are exploring the possibility that the stress of the relocation and new job may have contributed to the tragic outcome.
The incident has left the community in shock and sorrow. Witex, fondly known as Ola, was a teacher at the nearby Rodeph Sholom School. The loss of a young family has deeply affected the neighborhood and beyond.
