Banned Driver Found Guilty in Tragic Accident Involving Child’s Death

A heart-wrenching incident has led to the conviction of a banned driver after a young boy lost his life due to being trapped beneath a van’s wheels. Layton Darwood, a five-year-old, tragically lost his life when he became ensnared beneath the wheels of a Ford Transit Tipper. The driver, Darren Jacques, was already banned from driving due to a previous drink-driving offense. The incident occurred as Layton climbed onto the trailer attached to the van.

The court ruled that Jacques, 42, was responsible for Layton’s death due to his actions while being disqualified from driving. In August 2020, Layton went to a shop along with three other children to buy some sweets. At the same time, Jacques was inside the store purchasing alcohol, leaving his van with a trailer and small digger outside. Surveillance footage captured him passing by Layton and the other kids as he returned to his van.

Tragically, Layton had managed to climb onto the trailer but fell when Jacques began driving away. This led to Layton suffering fatal injuries as he was trapped under the van’s wheels. In a panic, Jacques provided false information to the police, including a fake name and incorrect details about his birthdate and address.

Sergeant Alan Keenleyside, a Forensic Collision Investigator with Northumbria Police, emphasized that Jacques was aware of the presence of the children and should have exercised greater caution when moving the vehicle. Jacques has been granted bail until his sentencing on December 4.

Layton’s mother, Stephany, expressed the family’s profound grief and loss. She described Layton as a joyful and loving young boy, whose bright future was tragically cut short. She acknowledged the long and challenging journey to attain justice for Layton, crediting the determination of her mother and Northumbria Police for bringing the case to this point.

While the court’s decision provides a sense of justice, Stephany noted the bittersweet nature of the situation. She thanked the dedication of law enforcement officers who worked diligently to bring about justice for Layton, recognizing that their actions spoke louder than words ever could.
