Authorities Hunt for Homicide Suspect Mistakenly Released from Jail
Indiana authorities have launched an expanded search for Kevin Mason, a homicide suspect who was accidentally released from jail last week. Over 100 officers from various agencies are now assisting in the search, with additional personnel deployed in and around Indianapolis to locate the 28-year-old. Mason had been incarcerated for a 2021 murder case in Minnesota, but due to a “faulty review by staff,” he was erroneously released from the Adult Detention Center on September 13, as confirmed by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
During a press briefing, Marion County Sheriff’s Office Col. James Martin stated that they are pursuing leads both inside and outside of Indianapolis. Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal emphasized their plan to have a strong presence throughout the city to pressure anyone harboring Mason. Forestal warned that when they knock, it won’t be the usual polite tap.
US Marshals Offer $10,000 Reward for Murder Suspect’s Capture
Mason’s initial arrest occurred on September 11, but just two days later, he was mistakenly released due to the error. The sheriff’s office has since terminated two employees connected to this release. They revealed that they intentionally withheld this information from the public for six days to maintain a tactical advantage.
U.S. Marshals have also joined the hunt, announcing a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to Mason’s arrest. Authorities have described Mason as “armed and dangerous.”
Assistance from Accomplice
According to Sheriff Forestal, Mason has received assistance from 29-year-old Desiree Oliver, a nurse who is believed to be his girlfriend. Oliver picked him up, provided him with a cell phone and clothes, and likely knows his current whereabouts. She is currently being interrogated by officers, though she has not cooperated. Oliver was arrested on one count of assisting a criminal.
Forestal delivered a stern message, stating, “We’re going to be very aggressive in pursuing you. We will find you, and we will criminally charge you, just as we did with Desiree Oliver.”
Suspect’s Description
Kevin Mason is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing around 205 pounds. He has a cross tattoo under his right eye and the letters “S-U-B” tattooed on his chest, along with a tattoo on his neck.
Authorities urge anyone with information about Mason’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
