Popular Show Faces Renewal Reversal Amidst Delays

Fans of the intriguing teen mystery drama, “The Society,” were left hanging after Netflix decided to backtrack on its renewal commitment. The series, which garnered praise upon its debut in May 2019, encountered setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These complications led Netflix to revoke its plans for a second season of the well-loved show.

In August 2020, Netflix issued a statement explaining the tough call: “We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This. We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID.”

Earlier that same year, lead actress Kathryn Newton offered a tantalizing glimpse into the anticipated second season. While keeping details under wraps, she hinted at the direction the story might take. “To me, it feels like a lot [of it is] about where the story is going to start. I can’t say anything obviously, but people aren’t ready. I’m not even ready!” Newton shared exclusively with Us Weekly in January 2020. “I really love [my character] Allie and I’m kind of influenced already by what I know, so I can’t say, but she’s been, like, the king of this society and so heavy is the crown that bears the throne.”

In a different corner of the television realm, “A League of Their Own” became an instant hit after premiering on Prime Video in August 2022. The show’s success prompted a renewal for a final four-episode season in March 2023. However, Prime Video reversed this decision due to complications arising from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes happening simultaneously.

Addressing the cancellation in August 2023, star Abbi Jacobson took to Instagram to express her feelings: “To blame this cancellation on the strike is bulls—t and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today.”
