Tragedy Strikes: 9-Year-Old Fatally Struck by Freight Train in Central Illinois
In a heartbreaking incident, a 9-year-old child on their way to school met with a tragic accident and lost their life after being struck by a freight train in central Illinois. The incident unfolded on a fateful Friday morning, leaving a community in mourning.
The unfortunate event occurred in the village of Royal at approximately 7:45 a.m. The child was struck in close proximity to other individuals who, thankfully, escaped physical harm during the incident. Lieutenant Curt Apperson of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a “tragic accident,” casting a shadow of sorrow over the community.
The young victim was struck near the tracks, a mere two blocks away from Prairieview-Ogden North Elementary, as reported by The News-Gazette of Champaign. The proximity to the school highlights the profound sadness of the situation, as a young life was lost so close to the place of learning.
