New York City Identifies Two More 9/11 Victims

In an ongoing mission spanning decades, New York City officials have recently identified the remains of two individuals who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11, 2001. While the identities of these individuals remain undisclosed, their families are one step closer to closure.

Through meticulous work, the city’s medical examiner has successfully identified 1,649 victims of the World Trade Centre attacks by employing advanced DNA sequencing techniques. These methods allow them to analyze even the tiniest fragments recovered from the rubble.

Thanks to technological advancements, including more sensitive testing and faster results, it’s now possible to identify remains that previously yielded no identifiable DNA. These same techniques are used to locate missing service members in the US military and identify victims of recent disasters like the Maui wildfires.

However, despite these technological leaps, the rate of positive identifications has slowed in recent years, with the last one occurring two years ago. More than 1,000 human remains from the 9/11 attacks remain unidentified and are currently housed at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Centre site.

Dr. Jason Graham, the city’s chief medical examiner, emphasized their unwavering commitment to fulfilling their “solemn pledge” to return these remains to their families. He stated, “Faced with the largest and most complex forensic investigation in the history of our country, we stand undaunted in our mission to use the latest advances in science to serve this promise.”

As we commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the attacks, we remember the thousands of lives lost when two hijacked aircraft struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre on that fateful day in New York City.
