5 killed in riot at Mexican prison

Five Men Killed in Prison Fight in Mexico’s Tabasco State

In a shocking incident, five men lost their lives during a violent clash among inmates at a prison in Mexico’s Gulf coast state of Tabasco. This tragic event occurred late Thursday, and it has left the nation in shock.

Out of the five inmates who lost their lives, four were either on trial or serving sentences for severe crimes like rape, homicide, or other violent offenses, as reported by the state police department.

The authorities quickly responded to the situation, and they’ve managed to regain control of the prison. The good news is that no one else was harmed, and no inmates managed to escape. The police have detained around 16 prisoners in connection with these terrible killings.

The police department has stated that the incident was the result of a “fight between groups” from different cell blocks. However, disturbing photos and videos, seemingly created by inmates themselves and shared on social media, suggest that the deceased men may have been targeted as retribution for extorting money from their fellow inmates.

If this is confirmed, it wouldn’t be the first time that Mexican prisons have witnessed violence due to similar reasons. Inmates, often associated with outside gangs, frequently attempt to demand protection payments from their fellow prisoners. These gangs resort to threats of violence against prisoners or their families to enforce these payment demands.

As recently as 2022, a massive brawl erupted at the Apodaca prison, just outside the northern city of Monterrey. This incident revolved around complaints that some prisoners were attempting to extort money from their fellow inmates, resulting in 56 inmates being injured.

This unfortunate situation is part of a broader problem in Mexico, where people awaiting trial are often held in the same prisons as convicted inmates. Furthermore, many Mexican prisons suffer from inadequate supervision, allowing inmates to essentially control parts of these facilities.

In summary, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues within the Mexican prison system, where violence and extortion remain significant concerns.
