Tragic Loss of 3-Year-Old on Migrant Bus Journey
In a heartbreaking revelation, an autopsy has unveiled the cause of a 3-year-old girl’s untimely death on a bus transporting immigrants from Texas to Chicago last month. The Illinois coroner, Troy Cannon, confirmed that a bacterial infection, along with other contributing factors, led to the unfortunate passing of Jismary Alejandra Barboza González on August 10th.
The autopsy findings point to a bacterial infection, aspiration pneumonia, diarrhea, and vomiting, which collectively triggered imbalances in her body’s electrolytes. These imbalances, in turn, resulted in brain swelling, ultimately leading to her tragic demise. Notably, Jismary’s extremely low weight and stature for her age further compounded the severity of her condition.
A Startling Onset of Symptoms
The distressing journey began for young Jismary and her family as they boarded the bus in Brownsville, Texas. At that initial juncture, Jismary exhibited mild symptoms and felt unwell, presenting only a low-grade fever. Despite her condition, she was allowed to board the bus.
However, during the course of the trip, her condition took a turn for the worse. Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and dehydration began to manifest. In response, she was administered electrolyte drinks, and her body temperature reached 100.1 degrees Fahrenheit. As the journey continued, the child’s condition deteriorated further, and she began experiencing difficulty breathing.
Context of the Journey
It’s important to note that the bus was part of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s program, initiated last year, which involved transporting migrants entering the state to Democratic-led cities across the nation.
Jismary’s family embarked on their journey to the United States in May, leaving their home in Colombia, where she was born. This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the challenges and risks faced by immigrants seeking a better life in the United States.
