Tragic Collision Claims 20 Lives in South Africa
In a devastating incident, a head-on collision between a truck and a bus occurred in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province, resulting in the loss of 20 lives, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The tragic accident took place as the bus, carrying workers to the Venetia mine near the Zimbabwe border, collided with a truck. Construction company Murray & Roberts Cementation revealed that 17 of its employees were among the casualties, with an additional four workers sustaining injuries. The company expressed its commitment to providing support to the families affected by this tragedy.
These workers were en route to undertake an underground project at the Venetia mine, which is operated by the renowned mining company De Beers. Meanwhile, traffic officials remained at the accident scene on Monday, diligently working to determine the cause of this devastating incident.
Provincial Transport Minister Florence Radzilani, who visited the crash site, expressed her concerns about the condition of some trucks on the roads. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy, emphasizing that this is essential to safeguard the lives of innocent individuals traveling on the road.
Minister Radzilani also pointed out that some truck drivers actively avoid routes where traffic officials are known to be present. This avoidance stems from concerns about the roadworthiness of certain vehicles or the lack of valid permits among some drivers. She revealed that there are already allegations regarding the truck driver’s lack of a license and the truck’s roadworthiness, pending further investigation.
